Taxi-Book is a Maxxelli-powered mobile application aimed at getting expats from A to B, hassle-free.
The app provides a database of Chinese-translated points of interest, making the explanation of your desired shop, bar or complex to a Chinese taxi driver as easy as you could ever hope for.
Within the app you will find various location categories for various cities across China. From ‘Business + Banks’ to ‘Culture + Tourism’, Maxxelli have your destination covered.
Just search for where you desire to go to, and within the relevant page you will see that your destination has been translated into Chinese characters which you can then show to your driver. The app also has a sound feature which you can play to politely ask the driver to take you to the place you wish.
What’s more: Taxi-Book also features a small dictionary within itself, helping you to learn some basic Mandarin phrases which will help you get around in China, as well as location and map services to help you regain your bearings.
Downloading the app couldn’t be simpler, though the app is available only on iOS (Apple) devices for now:
1. Simply search for ‘Taxi-Book’ in your App Store.
2. Download the (free) Taxi-Book platform.
3. Once you have accessed the app, you can then begin to choose which city’s database you wish to download, from Chengdu to Changchun to Beijing, and explore all of Taxi-Book’s features.
4. The cost of downloading varies from city to city (Chengdu is just $0.99), however Maxxelli do feature Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Shenzhen versions completely free of charge.
5. Once downloaded, no internet connection is required!
The app is a hit with so many expats who are either unfamiliar of the Chinese language or simply unfamiliar with their surroundings. Be sure to buy it ahead of any potentially sticky situation you may find yourself in case you are lost in China, or simply in case you are not sure if the taxi driver will understand your desired destination!
